The Project

What we built, and why.

Serumpun Sarawak is a cultural and culinary initiative led by Chef James Won. It brings ancestral knowledge, traditional craftsmanship and indigenous ingredients from Sarawak into a fine-dining theatre experience — taking the state’s heritage from the rainforests of Mulu to an international stage in Osaka.

The website is a storytelling platform for partners and audiences: it has to convey a culture with respect, credit the institutions behind it and invite partnership.

Design Process

How we approached it.

We let photography of people and place lead, in a dark, earthy palette with copper accents drawn from traditional craft. The copy is spare and respectful; the culture speaks first.

The institutional partners — the Sarawak Tourism Board and the state’s Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts — are presented as part of the story, followed by the venue and a single call to partner.

Problem Solving

Challenges and solutions.

01 Challenge

Representing indigenous culture with respect.

Heritage told carelessly becomes decoration.

01 Solution

Let the culture lead.

Imagery and restrained copy put people, craft and place first, with credit to the custodians of the story.

02 Challenge

Speaking to partners and the public at once.

Government bodies, sponsors and diners need different reassurance.

02 Solution

Credibility inside the narrative.

Institutional partners appear within the story, and partnership is the single action.

Outcome

Results and impact.

Serumpun Sarawak has a storytelling platform that carries Sarawak’s culinary heritage to an international audience and gives partners a clear way to join the initiative.

Takeaway

Final thoughts.

“Culture travels best when it is told by the people it belongs to.”

We designed the site as a stage, not a brochure — and kept the spotlight on the heritage.
